This is Deasún Ó Conchúir from Scatterwork to introduce another short video about the benefits of virtual training.
We’ve mentioned before that the concept here is to deliver training using the internet as an interface rather than a training room. While it doesn’t generate all the same benefits of meeting face to face, it can certainly be the right decision when all the other issues are brought into consideration, such as timing, travel and so forth.
Each trainer brings particular things to the party, so by going for global training we have a wider choice of trainers. One of the benefits that we can offer at Scatterwork is interaction with participants in three languages: English, French, and German. Now it’s one thing to speak a language; it’s another to attend training in it.
The European Union has a scale of competencies for language learning. It shows quite clearly that people feel comfortable in a listening mode with less experience than they require to be in a speaking mode. So, for training a lot of it is listening and then working in groups. We work on this basis. The topic is explained, then we put people into groups so that they can work on exercises or share their ideas and so forth. The language demand in smaller groups like that is much less than in a plenary session with fifteen or twenty participants.
What this means is that people who have more moderate skills in the language concerned can still participate viably in the training. That’s a particular skill set. Being based in Switzerland, the dominant languages are German and French, and business uses English a lot. This is our home environment from a language viewpoint.
In the modern world, the optimal solution may not be traditional
face-to-face training that everybody likes and finds very effective, but virtual training.
